Adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages is implementing significant changes to its fall 2027 West Coast cruise season, impacting several planned voyages aboard its Brilliant Lady vessel. The alterations include the cancellation of a Halloween sailing and the replacement of two weeklong cruises with four shorter itineraries, one of which will now feature a port call in Avalon on California’s Catalina Island. These schedule adjustments reflect a strategic effort by the cruise line to diversify its offerings.

Specifically, the seven-night Halloween sailing, originally scheduled to depart from Los Angeles on October 30, 2027, has been canceled due to a private charter. Following this, two other seven-night voyages in November are being replaced by shorter options. The initial seven-night cruise slated for November 6, 2027, will now be split into separate three- and four-night cruises. Similarly, a sailing previously scheduled for November 20 will also be replaced by two shorter itineraries. The new four-night itinerary introduces a visit to Avalon, providing guests with a day to explore Catalina Island, in addition to a stop in Ensenada, Mexico. These four-night cruises are scheduled to depart on November 6 and November 20, 2027. A new three-night sailing will offer a full day in Ensenada, Mexico, with departures set for November 10 and November 24, 2027. These additions mark new short cruise itineraries for Brilliant Lady’s West Coast offerings.

According to Virgin Voyages, the reshaping of its West Coast season aims to offer a greater variety in cruise lengths and destinations. The original fall season from Los Angeles primarily featured seven-night sailings, with most visiting Mexican Riviera ports like Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta. The new shorter itineraries are designed to provide additional options for travelers seeking brief, kid-free getaways, including the newly added visits to Ensenada and Catalina Island.

Passengers affected by these changes have been offered several options. Those booked on the canceled Halloween sailing can opt for a full refund or choose to move to another seven-night voyage departing from Los Angeles in fall 2027. For guests who choose to transfer, Virgin Voyages has stated it will honor their original fare and promotions and provide $100 in onboard credit. Travelers whose November seven-night voyages are being replaced also have the choice to select one of the new shorter itineraries if their travel dates cannot be altered, with payments already made being applied to the new sailing and an additional $100 in onboard credit. Alternatively, affected passengers can receive a full refund of their voyage fare if they choose not to move to another sailing.

While Virgin Voyages has provided more than a year of advance notice for these changes, some passengers who booked their vacations well in advance have expressed disappointment. One traveler, who had planned back-to-back sailings, noted the specific appeal of the Halloween cruise and the subsequent voyage's overnight visit to Cabo San Lucas. Another Reddit user, mahka42, specifically mentioned booking a November 20 sailing due to an itinerary that included La Paz, which will now be replaced. The private charter responsible for the Halloween cruise cancellation is consistent with Virgin Voyages' business model, as the company actively markets full-ship charters for private events and corporate trips. While such changes can disrupt publicly available cruises and are not exclusive to Virgin Voyages, some passengers contend that the impact can feel more pronounced when booking with a cruise line that operates fewer ships. This sentiment suggests that passengers may be more likely to encounter charter-related cancellations with smaller fleets. These 2027 schedule changes also follow a challenging 2026 season for Brilliant Lady, during which multiple sailings were diverted from the Mexican Riviera to the California coast due to hurricane threats along Mexico’s Pacific coast.
